This wasn’t some unfortunate incident, this was an assassination by a madman inspired by violent rhetoric prevalent in our public discourse. Harmful rhetoric and political violence go hand in hand.
Rhetoric of incitement:
Since 2015 politically violent rhetoric has been used towards keeping Trump from the oval office; “Trump is a threat to democracy, is a dictator, traitor, and relentless demonization as a ‘Nazis’ who ‘must be stopped.”
President Joe Biden, following the Trump assassination attempts in July and August of 2024, called for a reduction in heated political rhetoric, emphasizing the importance of resolving political differences peacefully.
Disney boss Bob Iger and ABC News chief Almin Karamehmedovic have asked the hosts of The View to tone down the violent political rhetoric.
Lessons not learned:
Not just legacy media anymore; thousands of you-tube influencers have joined in using their personal feelings to cast hatred towards political figures in hopes of bringing them down.
We should have a spirited exchange of ideas. Attack ideas, not people.
